December 10th, 2010 - Fideicomiso de Conservación de Puerto Rico (PR Conservation Trust)

The Environmental Science Club students of the Mater Salvatoris College in Rio Piedras interested to visit the facilities of the Old Aqueduct of San Juan to take water samples at the entrance of the River Piedras. These samples are part of a multidisciplinary project, called PR Water Cops CL, which will enable students to measure various parameters in several river basins in order to study its nature and understand the potential impact of human activities on them. This project will also develop student’s skills in technology in applications such as Logger Pro and Vernier Software LabQuest, MS Publisher 2007, ArcGIS Explorer, Adobe Premier and Thinkquest.org or Blogger.
For the first time are using GIS technology, specifically exploring the use of ArcGIS Explorer. This program is a simple GIS to start managing this type of technology. It develops in students the understanding that both need space now, in the 21st century
We are interested in taking water samples from the river stones in the Old Aqueduct facilities for safe access. In addition, the river is near the community where some of our students reside giving a sense of belonging necessary for the project. Sampling would be the Saturday, January 22, 2010 at 9:00 am-12pm. be a total of about 15 people (students in fifth / sixth grade with an adult club). We are also excited to learn about ancient aqueduct of San Juan, so I took the opportunity to ask for a brief tour of the site.
